Nothing is as it seems

Psalm 71:1-14

In Psalm 71 a man prays for rescue. He is an old man and weakened by age. That is true. He is also strong by his faith in God. That is true too - and is what his enemies do not see. He has had a long relationship with God and has had experiences of Him that those who torment him have not. It makes me wonder: how many times has he prayed a similar prayer during his lifetime? Psalm 71 is a beautiful testament to lifelong faith.

There is a contrast between the man's obvious vulnerability and his spiritual strength. On the surface it seems as though circumstances are dire. He is being accused, there are enemies who "lie in wait for [his] life." Psalm 71:10. For many, this is proof that our psalmist is a God-forsaken man. Perhaps his accusers find him laughable, mad, or plain foolish.

Christ was mocked on the cross for his enduring belief. I can see where the Roman soldiers were coming from (unfortunately). Listening to God often seems irrational in a material world that values results, success and appearances. Those are easiest to see. It takes strength to follow God, and as this psalmist does, to trust that God will deliver what is right for us if we live by faith.

Though it's not an easy task, God gives us this strength.

God was with Christ. He was with our psalmist and He is with us always. :) yay. He is the psalmist's refuge, and even in times of trouble the psalmist is filled with praise of God's glory.

God, we listen for your voice and seek your kingdom in all that we do. Our strength lies in You. You are our shelter. ♡ Thank you, God! Amen.
